Cited overview

ISO 26262-1:2018 is intended to be applied to safety-related systems that include one or more electrical and/or electronic (E/E) systems and that are installed in series production road vehicles, excluding mopeds. It addresses hazards caused by malfunctioning behaviour of safety-related E/E systems, not AI methods. ISO/PAS 8800:2024 then applies to safety-related systems … that use AI technology in the same series-production setting and addresses the risk of undesired safety-related behaviour at the vehicle level due to output insufficiencies, systematic errors and random hardware errors of AI elements. The PAS catalog does not provide specific guidelines for software tools that use AI methods.

UL 4600 is a safety argument for vehicles that can operate in an autonomous mode without human supervision. No official catalog page we cite says these three documents are one certificate. See Automotive AI assurance. Listings are tagged only when a cited vendor page names the standard.

Frameworks

  • UL 4600

ANSI/UL standard for building and evaluating a safety argument for vehicles that operate in an autonomous mode without human supervision.

    Tools tagged UL 4600

  • ISO 26262

Functional safety for safety-related E/E systems installed in series production road vehicles, excluding mopeds. Addresses hazards from malfunctioning E/E behaviour, not AI-specific methods.

    Tools tagged ISO 26262

  • ISO/PAS 8800

Publicly Available Specification for safety-related E/E systems that use AI in series production road vehicles. Addresses vehicle-level risk from AI output insufficiencies, systematic errors and random hardware errors.

    Tools tagged ISO/PAS 8800

Compare listed tools

  • Ansys medini analyze vs Astah GSN

Both cited pages name ISO 26262. Medini implements HAZOP, HARA, FTA and FMEA/FMEDA and also names IEC 61508 and ARP 4761. Astah draws GSN safety-case arguments and names automotive (ISO 26262). Not a recommendation.

  • Ansys SCADE Suite vs Rapita RVS

Both cited pages are commercial airborne-software tools, not neural-network verifiers. SCADE names a KCG C/Ada generator qualified to DO-178C/DO-330 TQL-1. RVS names requirements-based testing, MC/DC, WCET and DO-178C qualification kits.

Questions

Does ISO 26262 certify an AI model?

No official ISO catalog page we cite says that. ISO 26262-1 is functional safety for malfunctioning E/E behaviour in series-production road vehicles. ISO/PAS 8800 is the AI-scoped companion. UL 4600 is a separate autonomous-product safety-case standard.

Why are some AV tools untagged for ISO 26262?

Industry and framework tags come only from the cited vendor page. A toolchain that names autonomous vehicles but does not name ISO 26262, ISO/PAS 8800 or UL 4600 is not tagged to those frameworks.
