ISO/PAS 8800 and ISO 26262 — reading the scope lines side by side

The catalog entry for ISO 26262-1:2018 says the standard addresses hazards caused by malfunctioning behaviour of safety-related E/E systems. The entry for ISO/PAS 8800:2024 says it addresses the risk of undesired safety-related behaviour at the vehicle level due to output insufficiencies, systematic errors and random hardware errors of AI elements.
The PAS entry also says it does not provide specific guidelines for software tools that use AI methods. The cross-domain ISO/IEC TR 5469:2024 is a separate technical report on AI and functional safety, titled “Artificial intelligence — Functional safety and AI systems”.
Editorial judgment: The two scope lines suggest different supplier questions. For ISO 26262, ask which E/E item and which safety goals the evidence supports. For ISO/PAS 8800, ask what the vehicle-level claim is for the AI element and which insufficiencies it covers. A tool qualification certificate for a code generator or test tool answers neither question about a trained model. We do not claim either document is a certificate or a type-approval; the catalog pages do not say so.
Gated vendor questions that follow this reading are in the automotive buyer kits on the kits page.
