What it is

ISO lists ISO/PAS 8800:2024, Road vehicles — Safety and artificial intelligence as a Publicly Available Specification, edition 1, published December 2024 (publication date 13 December 2024), from ISO/TC 22/SC 32. The catalog gives a length of 172 pages.

The official abstract says the document applies to safety-related systems that include one or more electrical and/or electronic (E/E) systems that use AI technology and that is installed in series production road vehicles, excluding mopeds. It addresses the risk of undesired safety-related behaviour at the vehicle level due to output insufficiencies, systematic errors and random hardware errors of AI elements within the vehicle. That includes interactions with AI elements that are not part of the vehicle itself but that can have a direct or indirect impact on vehicle safety.

The abstract focuses primarily on a subclass of AI methods defined as machine learning (ML). It does not provide specific guidelines for software tools that use AI methods. It describes safety-related properties of AI systems that can be used to construct a convincing safety assurance claim for the absence of unreasonable risk. ISO sells the full text.

What a PAS is not

ISO classifies it as a Publicly Available Specification, not as an International Standard with a certification scheme on the public catalog page. We have not found an official ISO sentence that says ISO/PAS 8800 replaces ISO 26262 or UL 4600.

The development of AI elements that are not part of the vehicle is not within the scope of this document.

How it relates to other frameworks

  • ISO 26262. Functional safety for malfunctioning E/E behaviour in series-production road vehicles. PAS 8800 is the AI-scoped companion on the catalog pages we cite.
  • UL 4600. Autonomous-product safety-case standard. Different issuer and scope.
  • Aviation. We have not found an official FAA or EASA page that adopts ISO/PAS 8800 as a means of compliance.
