Safety-critical systems

Functional safety and autonomous-product arguments. Dedicated automotive, medical, machinery and process landings sit beside this page. Sources last checked 15 October 2026.

Cited overview

IEC 61508-1:2010 is a basic safety publication for electrical/electronic/programmable electronic systems that carry out safety functions. One of its objectives is to facilitate the development of product and application sector international standards. ISO/IEC TR 5469:2024 then describes properties and methods for AI inside a safety-related function, non-AI safety functions around AI-controlled equipment, and AI used to design safety functions. The catalog pages do not say the technical report replaces IEC 61508. See TR 5469 and IEC 61508 for ML components. Organizational AI risk-management guidance and AI-system life-cycle processes are a different pair: ISO/IEC 23894 and 5338 for engineering teams.

Dedicated sector landings

Automotive, medical devices, industrial machinery and process industries now have their own cited pages. This page stays the functional-safety overview. Rail and nuclear remain context only; we still do not invent those directories.

Frameworks

  • ISO/IEC 42001

The first international management-system standard for AI. It governs how an organization manages AI risk, not how an individual AI product is certified.

    Tools tagged ISO/IEC 42001

  • ISO/IEC 23894

International guidance on managing AI-specific risk for organizations that develop, produce, deploy or use AI products, systems and services.

    Tools tagged ISO/IEC 23894

  • ISO/IEC TR 5469

A technical report on properties, risk factors, methods and processes when AI is used in, around, or to design safety-related functions.

    Tools tagged ISO/IEC TR 5469

  • UL 4600

ANSI/UL standard for building and evaluating a safety argument for vehicles that operate in an autonomous mode without human supervision.

    Tools tagged UL 4600

  • IEC 61508

Basic safety publication for electrical, electronic and programmable electronic systems that carry out safety functions. Facilitates sector standards; does not by itself confer an AI-specific SIL.

Questions

Are automotive, medical, machinery and process now separate landings?

Yes. Those dedicated pages cite official sources. This page remains the functional-safety overview. Rail and nuclear stay context only; we still do not invent those directories.

Does ISO/IEC TR 5469 replace IEC 61508 for machine learning?

No official ISO or IEC catalog page we cite says that. TR 5469 is a technical report on AI in safety-related functions. IEC 61508 remains the basic safety publication for E/E/PE safety-related systems.

Is UL 4600 an aviation or DoD 3000.09 means of compliance?

No official FAA, EASA, RTCA or DoD page we cite adopts UL 4600 as a means of compliance for aircraft or weapon systems. UL 4600’s public catalog is scoped to vehicles in an autonomous mode and the dynamic driving task.
