What it is
IEC lists IEC 61511-1:2016 as giving requirements for the specification, design, installation, operation and maintenance of a safety instrumented system (SIS), so that it can be confidently entrusted to achieve or maintain a safe state of the process. The same abstract says IEC 61511-1 has been developed as a process sector implementation of IEC 61508:2010. Edition 2.0 was published 24 February 2016.
The consolidated IEC 61511-1:2016+A1:2017 consists of the second edition (2016) and its amendment 1 (2017).
What it is not
We have not found an official IEC catalog sentence that says IEC 61511 is an AI-management standard, that it confers a SIL on a machine-learning model, or that ISO/IEC TR 5469 replaces it. Listings are tagged only when the cited vendor page names IEC 61511.
How it relates to other frameworks
- IEC 61508. Parent basic safety publication. 61511 is the process-sector implementation of the 2010 edition.
- ISO/IEC TR 5469. Technical report on AI in safety-related functions. Not a process SIS standard.
