Process-industry SIS — IEC 61511 and the parent IEC 61508 publication
Informational only, not professional or legal advice. Facts are linked to the source we checked; statuses can change after the date above.
IEC 61511-1:2016 gives requirements for the specification, design, installation, operation and maintenance of a safety instrumented system (SIS), so that it can be confidently entrusted to achieve or maintain a safe state of the process. The catalog says it has been developed as a process sector implementation of IEC 61508:2010.
IEC 61508-1:2010 remains the basic safety publication. We have not found an official IEC sentence that IEC 61511 confers a SIL on a machine-learning model or that ISO/IEC TR 5469 replaces either standard.
Listings are tagged to IEC 61511 only when the cited page names that standard. HIMA HIMax names IEC 61511 up to SIL 3. Rockwell AADvance names IEC 61508 up to SIL 3 and IEC 61511-1. exSILentia names a checklist for documenting compliance with IEC 61511. Astah GSN quotes Tim Kelly that assurance cases are used across medical, process industries, nuclear, automotive, transportation and defence. That is an industry mention, not an IEC 61511 clause. Ansys medini analyze names IEC 61508, the parent publication, not 61511.
