I'm selling AI into EU aerospace

Cited starting points for a supplier placing AI on the EU aviation market: extra-territorial reach, the military exclusion, civil-aviation treatment, and EASA’s concept paper. Sources last checked 15 October 2026.

Cited intro

The consolidated EU AI Act can apply to providers and deployers outside the Union under Article 2. The Commission’s Article 2 service-desk page is the official scope walkthrough. Exclusive military, defence or national-security use is excluded; dual-use can fall back in. See EU AI Act obligations for aerospace suppliers outside the EU.

High-risk Chapter III dates were moved by Regulation (EU) 2026/1744 to 2 December 2027 (Annex III) and 2 August 2028 (Annex I). Civil aviation is treated through sectoral law. EASA’s Concept Paper Issue 02 remains preliminary guidance, not final rules. The supplier brief is EASA Issue 2 explained for suppliers.

Frameworks

  • SAE G-34

The joint SAE and EUROCAE committee writing aviation AI standards. Two information reports are issued; the ML development-assurance standard (ARP6983 / ED-324) is still a draft in the sources we checked.

  • EASA AI Concept Paper

EASA's preliminary guidance for Level 1 and 2 machine-learning applications in aviation, including the W-shaped learning assurance process. Included because the FAA and SAE work builds on and parallels it.

  • EU AI Act

The EU's horizontal AI regulation. For aerospace and defense, the key points are its military exclusion, its treatment of civil aviation, and the dates moved by the 2026 Digital Omnibus.
