ISO/IEC 42001 vs ISO 9001/AS9100 for aerospace quality systems

Aerospace quality people already live in ISO 9001 and the IAQG 9100-series (AS9100 in the Americas). ISO/IEC 42001 is a different management-system standard: an organizational Artificial Intelligence Management System. Official pages describe both. They do not, on the sources below, make a 42001 certificate a substitute for AS9100, or the reverse.

Status as of 14 October 2026: UKAS still dates the first accreditation for certification of artificial intelligence management systems to ISO/IEC 42001:2023 15 January 2026, granted to BSI. BSI still dates its ANAB accreditation 10 March 2026. ISO catalog and explainer pages, plus the IAQG certification and ANAB AS9100 pages, returned HTTP 403 this pass; those claims are kept from the last successful editorial fetch of the same URLs. We still found no IAQG or ANAB AS9100 page that adds ISO/IEC 42001 to the ICOP scheme.

Three standards, three jobs

ISO 9001:2015 specifies requirements for a quality management system. ISO’s management-system standards page is the catalog of MSS that share a common structure.

ISO/IEC 42001:2023 specifies requirements for an AI management system: a set of interrelated or interacting elements of an organization intended to establish policies and objectives … in relation to the responsible development, provision or use of AI systems. ISO’s explainer says it does not replace laws or regulations. Certification is voluntary. ISO does not certify organizations; independent certification bodies do. See What auditors ask for in an ISO/IEC 42001 certification audit.

The IAQG Certification Scheme is the Aviation, Space, and Defense scheme for Aerospace Quality Management System (AQMS) certificates. IAQG says the 9100-series consists of 9100, 9110, and 9120 and that these standards are all based on ISO 9001 quality system requirements, supplemented by additional quality system requirements established by the industry through IAQG. Certificates are issued by accredited Certification Bodies and recorded in OASIS. The CB audits to ISO/IEC 17021-1, IAQG 9104/1, and IAQG 9101.

ANAB accredits CBs against ISO/IEC 17021-1 and applicable IAQG 9104-series requirements to issue AS9100 certifications in the ICOP scheme. ANAB says AS9100 complements and is additive to the ISO 9001 QMS structure and framework without changing it and that the standard includes complete text of ISO 9001 QMS.

What we found — and did not find — about combining them

ISO presents 42001 as an MSS in the same family as other management-system standards. The ISO 42001 explainer places it in an ecosystem of ISO/IEC AI standards as the management system foundation. The ISO 9001 and MSS catalog pages are the official public statements that MSS share a structure organizations can run together. We did not reproduce Annex text from the paid 42001 standard.

We searched the IAQG certification page for “42001”, “artificial intelligence” and “AIMS”. We did not find those terms on that page. IAQG describes 9100, 9110, 9120, OASIS, and the 9104 trilogy. It does not, on the page we cite, add ISO/IEC 42001 to the ICOP scheme.

We searched the ANAB AS9100 page for “42001”. We did not find it. ANAB’s 42001 activity that this directory already cites is a separate accreditation: BSI’s March 2026 announcement that ANAB accredited BSI to certify ISO/IEC 42001. UKAS granted the first accreditation for certification of AIMS to ISO/IEC 42001:2023 on 15 January 2026. Those are AIMS accreditations, not AS9100 certificates.

What that means in practice, without inventing a crosswalk

Official pages support four statements:

  1. AS9100 / 9100 is ISO 9001 plus aerospace supplements, audited in ICOP and listed in OASIS.
  2. ISO/IEC 42001 is an organizational AIMS. ISO’s catalog says that rather than looking at the details of specific AI applications, it provides a practical way of managing AI-related risks and opportunities across an organization. It does not replace laws or regulations.
  3. 42001 certification is voluntary and is performed by independent certification bodies that may be accredited.
  4. We found no official IAQG or ANAB AS9100 page that treats a 42001 certificate as satisfying 9100, or a 9100 certificate as satisfying 42001.

Analysis, labeled as such: an aerospace supplier can run one management system that includes 9001/9100 quality processes and 42001 AI processes, because both are MSS. That is an integration choice. It is not an official IAQG combined certificate, and it is not airworthiness approval of a model. Product assurance still sits under the aviation pages on this site (FAA roadmap, EASA Issue 2, DO-178C / DO-330).
