SAE G-34 / EUROCAE WG-114 (AI in aviation standards)
The joint SAE and EUROCAE committee writing aviation AI standards. Two information reports are issued; the ML development-assurance standard (ARP6983 / ED-324) is still a draft in the sources we checked.
- Status
- AIR6988 (2021) and AIR6987 (2024) issued; ED-324 / ARP6983 listed as draft, target publication 31 December 2026

What it is
SAE’s G-34 Artificial Intelligence in Aviation committee is the issuing committee for AI documents in SAE’s aerospace catalogue. It works jointly with EUROCAE’s WG-114 on Artificial Intelligence, so each deliverable has an SAE number and a EUROCAE number.
Deliverables and status
As of 14 October 2026, from the primary pages:
| Deliverable | SAE / EUROCAE | Status in source |
|---|---|---|
| Statement of Concerns | AIR6988 / ER-022 | SAE lists AIR6988 as issued 30 April 2021. EUROCAE lists ER-022 as published 31 December 2020. We show both dates rather than treating them as one. |
| Taxonomy | AIR6987 / ER-027 | SAE lists AIR6987 as issued 12 December 2024. EUROCAE lists ER-027 as published 31 December 2024. |
| Development and assurance considerations for systems implemented with machine learning | ED-324 (SAE: ARP6983) | EUROCAE lists it as Draft, target publication date 31/12/2026 |
An EASA-hosted presentation shows the ED-324 timeline with “Reached consensus on 24 Aug 2026”. EUROCAE’s page, which we treat as authoritative for publication status, still lists ED-324 as a draft. Check both sites before relying on this.
An SAE journal article refers to the new ML standard as AS6983, while EUROCAE’s current deliverables list uses ED-324/ARP6983. We use ARP6983 / ED-324.
What Issue 1 is scoped to cover
Per the EASA-hosted presentation:
- It is a development-assurance process for approval of aeronautical systems and equipment implemented with ML, in airborne (crewed and uncrewed) and ATM/ANS domains.
- Issue 1 is limited to non-adaptive ML in supervised mode, up to IDAL C / AL 3 / SWAL 2.
- Information security and human factors considerations are out of Issue 1 scope; EUROCAE lists separate draft reports for human factors and information security.
The same presentation says EASA is considering ED-324/ARP6983 as an anticipated acceptable means of compliance (AMC) supporting aviation regulation and the EU AI Act, and that discussions with the FAA and other regulators continue. We found no FAA statement accepting it as a means of compliance.
Why it matters for the FAA path
The FAA roadmap states that the FAA is supporting the development of new standards for AI in SAE G-34. Until ARP6983 is published and accepted, applicants rely on project-specific FAA criteria and existing standards such as DO-178C and DO-330.
Access
Both published information reports are listed on SAE Mobilus: AIR6988 and AIR6987. Track ED-324 on the EUROCAE WG-114 page. Official pages and any listed tools whose public page names ARP6983, ED-324 or WG-114 are on the SAE G-34 filter. The live EUROCAE table, including companion ER drafts through 30 June 2027, is recorded in SAE G-34 / ARP6983 status. See also How to map an AI model to DO-178C / DO-330 tool qualification.
