SAE G-34 / ARP6983 status: what is published versus still draft

Practitioners ask whether ARP6983 is “out yet.” The public answer is still no. This page records what EUROCAE’s WG-114 list showed on 14 October 2026, next to SAE’s issued information reports and an EASA-hosted committee presentation. We do not quote the locked SAE or EUROCAE standard text. The standing explainer is SAE G-34 / EUROCAE WG-114.

EUROCAE titles the working group Artificial Intelligence. SAE’s catalogue uses the same words in AIR6988 and AIR6987. This article keeps those published names.

Published information reports

Deliverable SAE / EUROCAE Status in the sources we checked
Statement of Concerns AIR6988 / ER-022 SAE lists AIR6988 as issued 30 April 2021. EUROCAE lists ER-022 as published 31 December 2020. We show both dates.
Taxonomy AIR6987 / ER-027 SAE lists AIR6987 as issued 12 December 2024. EUROCAE lists ER-027 as published 31 December 2024.

Those two reports are information documents. They are not a development-assurance process standard.

ED-324 / ARP6983 is still Draft

EUROCAE lists ED-324, Development and Assurance considerations for Aeronautical Systems and Equipment implemented with Machine Learning as Draft, with target publication date 31/12/2026. The same row gives the SAE number as ARP6983.

An EASA-hosted presentation shows the ED-324 timeline with “Reached consensus on 24 Aug 2026”. EUROCAE’s working-group page, which we treat as authoritative for publication status, still lists ED-324 as a draft. Check both sites before relying on this.

An SAE journal article refers to the new ML standard as AS6983, while EUROCAE’s current deliverables list uses ED-324/ARP6983. We use ARP6983 / ED-324.

Companion drafts on the live EUROCAE table

As of 14 October 2026, WG-114 also lists these drafts. The numbered ER-43 is named; three others are still “ER-xxx”:

Deliverable on the EUROCAE page Status Target publication
ER-43 — Assessment of Human Factors concerns for the development of safety-related AI-based Systems in Aviation Draft 31/12/2026
ER-xxx — Assessment of Information Security concerns for the development of AI-based Systems in Aviation Draft 31/12/2026
ER-xxx — Supporting Information for ED-324 Draft 30/06/2027
ER-xxx — Reinforcement Learning Considerations and Gap Analysis for ED-324/ARP6983 Draft 30/06/2027
ER-xxx — Use Cases Considerations for ED-324 Draft 30/06/2027

Those rows are why “Issue 1 is in consensus” is not the same as “the package is published.” Human factors, information security, reinforcement learning and use-cases work remain on later targets.

What Issue 1 is scoped to cover (presentation, not the locked draft)

Per the EASA-hosted presentation:

  • It is a development-assurance process for approval of aeronautical systems and equipment implemented with ML, in airborne (crewed and uncrewed) and ATM/ANS domains.
  • Issue 1 is limited to non-adaptive ML in supervised mode, up to IDAL C / AL 3 / SWAL 2.
  • Information security and human factors considerations are out of Issue 1 scope; that matches the separate ER drafts above.

The same presentation says EASA is considering ED-324/ARP6983 as an anticipated acceptable means of compliance (AMC) supporting aviation regulation and the EU AI Act, and that discussions with the FAA and other regulators continue.

The FAA roadmap says the FAA is supporting the development of new standards for AI in SAE G-34. We found no FAA statement accepting ARP6983 as a means of compliance. Until it is published and accepted, applicants rely on project-specific FAA criteria and existing standards such as DO-178C and DO-330. See DO-330 tool qualification for ML toolchains.

What we searched for and did not find

We did not find a EUROCAE or SAE product page that sells ED-324 / ARP6983 as an issued standard on 14 October 2026. We did not find an FAA advisory circular that names ARP6983 as an acceptable means of compliance. One vendor page maps a product to ARP6983 sections; that is the vendor’s statement while EUROCAE still lists a draft — see Re:In (Moasoftware).

Questions

Did “consensus on 24 Aug 2026” publish the standard?

No. The EASA-hosted slides use that date. EUROCAE still lists ED-324 as Draft.

Can I use AIR6988 or AIR6987 as a means of compliance?

Those pages describe information reports (a statement of concerns and a taxonomy). We found no FAA or EASA sentence that treats them as a means of compliance for an ML airborne function.
