What it is

ISO lists ISO 10218-1:2025, Robotics — Safety requirements — Part 1: Industrial robots as edition 3, published February 2025 (publication date 5 February 2025), from ISO/TC 299. The catalog says the document establishes guidelines for the safety requirements specific to industrial robots, addressing them as partly completed machinery prior to integration into more complex systems as covered in ISO 10218-2.

The official exclusion list says the document is not applicable to military (defence), airborne and space robots, including outer space, medical robots, healthcare robots and service robots, among other uses. Requirements for robot integration and robot applications are covered in ISO 10218-2:2025.

What it is not

We have not found an official ISO catalog sentence that says ISO 10218 is an AI-management standard or that it is a means of compliance for Regulation (EU) 2023/1230. The catalog is explicit that medical, military and airborne robots are out of scope.

How it relates to other frameworks

  • Machinery Regulation 2023/1230. Union product-safety law. ISO 10218 is a voluntary International Standard on the catalog page.
  • IEC 61508. Basic E/E/PE safety publication. Different scope.
