CDAO publicly released the RAI Toolkit on 14 November 2023. That announcement said it provides a voluntary process that identifies, tracks, and improves alignment of AI projects to RAI best practices and the DoD AI Ethical Principles. The Department release calls it a key deliverable of the DoD RAI Strategy & Implementation Pathway.

It is built upon the earlier Responsible AI (RAI) Guidelines and Worksheets developed by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and Toolkit, and the IEEE 7000 Standard. The intuitive flow guides users through tailorable and modular assessments, tools, and artifacts throughout the AI product lifecycle.

What the live Tradewinds page calls it

The live Tradewinds page now titles the same public resource the AI Assurance (AIA) Toolkit. The older RAI Toolkit URL still resolves. It remains a self-evaluation resource that helps teams assess their AI projects at any stage of development, ensuring alignment with DoW AI Ethical Principles, and is accessible in both IL2 and IL5 environments. Named users include Program Managers, AI Developers, Acquisition Teams, Legal/Compliance, and End Users.

The toolkit is a voluntary assessment resource. We have not found a source that makes completing it a contractual or certification requirement. It is not a 3000.09 senior review and not a CMMC assessment.
